Camilla was right where he’d told her to be and she had the purse and Kat’s weapons in her hand.

“We must hurry,” she said, winded. “The Queen has joked about checking on the newlyweds. If she catches you in the act of sneaking her out she’ll have you both punished.”

“How did you know I was going to leave?” Kat asked.

Camilla smiled and squeezed her hand. “We were once like sisters.”

She wished she could remember. Maybe they could get close again. It would be nice to have a female friend.

They went out the servants’ door which led to a small fenced in part of the yard. Camilla pulled her into a tight hug and kissed both cheeks.

“Be safe, I look forward to your return.”

There wasn’t time for thank yous or long goodbyes. Thorne grabbed Kat’s hand and started across the yard, toward the woods in back of the mansion. They stayed in the shadows so as not to be easily seen from the house. She wondered if her people were still out there. She should have kept her wig on until she was back on neutral territory. It was too late now to worry about it though.

Thorne moved easily in the dark, weaving through the trees at the edge of the yard. She realized then that her own eyesight seemed to have improved and she had no trouble keeping up with him. Would her family see the changes in her right away?

“We will take a path through the woods and come out up the road a ways,” he said, keeping his voice quiet. She followed him when he headed into the brush. It was a well worn path that must have been there for years. After another ten minutes or so they came out into a clearing. Another couple yards brought them to a large ditch. He jumped over it and then reached over to help her cross. She took his hand and leapt over the wet gully. When she stumbled at the other side he tried to hold her up and they both fell, her on top of him.

“Well, here we are again,” he said, cupping her bottom with his hands. She laughed and collapsed on him. He held her for a minute and then she felt his body tense.

“Shh,” he said, and went perfectly still.

She stopped breathing. The fear that he and Camilla seemed to have for the Queen scared her. She didn’t want to be punished by that woman. Maybe they should have stayed upstairs and done what was expected of them.

But it wasn’t the Queen they needed to worry about at the moment. It was two of Kat’s people, walking up the road toward them. If they moved they would surely be seen.

“It’s my brother,” she whispered. “Don’t kill him.”

“Will you tell him the same about me?”

That didn’t seem like a fair question so she ignored him, flattening her body to his to not be spotted. If Darren saw her he would try to kill Thorne without hesitating.
